Florence May Tone (1871-1943)

Originally from Bergen, later lived in Ellenville NY before and during her marriage.

From an obituary (see below):

  • Teacher at Ellenville High School
  • Graduated from Wellesley College, 1893 (College records might be found at Wellesley)

The Wellesley College Legenda for 1893 lists Florence as a member of the class of 1893 (p. 26) and as Coxswain of the crew team (p.83). There's a team photo on the previous page but I'm not sure which person is Florence.

See Robert S. Terwilliger (1903-1934) for a booklet printed by her and her family in memory of her son. In addition to the details about Robert, a letter to Katharine Spofford Tone (1904-1983) (which says "Thursday night" but has no date) includes:

A letter to Sumner Larue Tone (1864-1942) dated January 10, 1935 mentions

From one of the two obituaries found in the archives:

Mrs. Bert H. Terwilliger Died Monday, December 27

Mrs. Florence M. Tone Terwiliger, one of Ellenville's well loved and highly respected residents, passed away at the Benedictine Hospital, Kingston, N. Y., on Monday, December twenty-seventh, after an illness of about three months.

Born at Bergen, N. Y., on January 3, 1870, she came to Ellenville in the fall of 1895 as Preceptress of the local high school. For three years she served there as a teacher and organizer of unusual ability.

She was married on October 26, 1898, to Bert H. Terwilliger, widely known Ellenville real estate and insurance man, by whom she is survived, and there is also a daughter, Katharine T. Terwilliger. An only son, Robert S. Terwilliger, passed away in May of 1934. Also surviving her are a brother, Frank J. Tone, Niagara Falls, N. Y.; three nephews, Frank J. Tone of Niagara Falls; Franchot Tone of Hollywood, California, and George S. Tone of Scarsdale, N. Y., and two nieces, Mrs. P. M. Harrington, Jr., of Tenanly, N. J. and Mrs. W. A. Hosmer of Belmont, Mass.

In 1924, the year the Veterans Memorial Hospital was dedicated, Mrs. Terwilliger acted as one af the organizers of the Women's Auxiliary of the veterans' Memorial Hospital, and was the head of the purchasing committee of this organization and very active in its work for many years. She wรคs also the first president of the hospital auxiliary.

Mrs. Terwilliger was a regular attendant at the Reformed Church in this village so long as her health permitted, and was a member and worker in the Ledies' Aid Society. She was also especially interested in the Missionary Society of the church, of which she was a member.

She always maintained an active nterest in Student Aid and the other alumni activities of Wellesley College, where she was graduated in the class of 1893.

Admired for her natural qualities, as well as her attainments, Mrs. Terwilliger occupied a prominent place and took an active part in the social and civic life of the community so long as her health permitted.

Many of the guests who spent their summers at the former Mt. Meenahga House will remember her, as this was a well known summer resort conducted for many years by her husband, Bert H. Terwilliger, and his father, the late Uriah E. Terwilliger.

Funeral services were held at the Terwilliger home at 23 Center street, yesterday afternoon, Wednesday. December twenty-ninth, at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Alfred H. Coons, long time neighbor and friend of the family, assisted by Rev. Lloyd W. Bell, pastor of the local Reformed Church.

Interment was in the family plot in Fantinekill Cemetery, with Willard H. Peet, H. Westlake Coons and two nepheps, George S. Tone and P. M. Harrington, Jr. acting as pall bearers. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Wood & Lambert.
